Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen subsequent to his departure from After Forever. Epica performs a blend of progressive metal, gothic metaland symphonic metal. Another component of Epica's style is power metal.
Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band founded in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen. Originally named Sahara Dust, this project was first for frontwoman Helena Michaelsen of Trail of Tears band. In early 2003, she was replaced by Simone Simons, Mark Jansen's girlfriend at the time. The definite name of the group, Epica, was chosen according to the Kamelot album bearing the same name.
Their first album, The Phantom Agony released in June 2003 is produced by Sascha Paeth (Kamelot particular producer). Their second album Consign to Oblivion is entitled with the theme the Maya civilization. In 2007, they released their third album: The Divine Conspiracy, which combines melodic sound as it has always been with an increase of power.
